Lets go back to Point #1: that the firearms ban only applies to students, faculty and staff. What if Virginia Tech were to enact a policy of free-speech zones restricting or prohibiting what students can say and where they can say it? I dont think there would be too much support for that. So why is it OK to restrict one civil liberty but not another?

Because for anti-gunners, guns = evil. They don't look at both rights as one in the same. In fact they probably look at guns similar to how people look at smoking. Something that was necessary and allowable in the past but we understand that those thing will kill you

You have seen the "This is the truth" commercials. I'm waiting to see one for guns. But that's right they have no factual information like smoking does, or at the least it could very easily be shot down. HARD.

The author further derides CHP holders by insinuating that we are cowboys just itching to get into a gunfight. In my experience, this could not be further from the truth. One of the very first things I was told in my CHP training was to do my very best to avoid any situation where I might even need a gun. CHP holders are taught that a firearm is to be used only in the very gravest extreme, when all other options of saving your life or someone elses have failed.

The cowboy issue comes from TV and media, and also is coaxed along by the anti-gun groups like Brady campaign for the prevention of gun ownership.

When I went to the protest on 07/07/07, that perspective was so profound it was sickening. Rainbow push against 3 old white men that looked like "good old boys". I'm pretty sure that a rainbow of gun owners wouldn't be on TV either.

During my conceal carry training, they said the same thing. In fact there was a situation we saw on video where an assailant spit on the person who owned the gun. If he pulled out the gun and shot him, he would goto jail, period. Your supposed to walk away. Now that is hard to do especially when someone has spit on you but that is what you are supposed to do. Like you said, pulling out your gun is only as a last resort.
